MACS Multi-User Systems/Hardware Suggestions

To make optimal use of the information managed by MACS Software, you may want to allow access to MACS by more than one person at a time. MACS Software can be for one or for many users. A multi-user system can be specified with your initial purchase, or added later as an upgrade.

Single User

In a single-user configuration, only one operator can enter data, view information or generate reports. MACS runs in single-user mode only on a PC-compatible computer running MS-DOS.

  • Operating system: MS-DOS
  • Hardware: PC-compatible computer

Multi-User

In a multi-user configuration, many users can simultaneously enter and view information and generate reports. MACS Software is compatible with two types of multi-user systems: MS-DOS local-area network (LAN) and Unix/Xenix.

Option 1

  • Operating system: MS-DOS with network software
  • Hardware: PC-compatible computers with a local area network (LAN)

Option 2

  • Operating system: Unix or Xenix
  • Hardware: Unix server with terminals

Running under MS-DOS, MACS can be integrated with Windows to permit multi-tasking, as illustrated.

Purchasing a Multi-User System

A single-user MACS Software system installed on a computer running MS-DOS can be upgraded to multi-user at any time. Regardless of the operating system you use, additional users can always be added.

A Multi-User Upgrade provides access to MACS for a second "user." You can purchase additional "users" to provide access for each additional "user" beyond two.

The number of "users" is based on the number of workstations accessing MACS simultaneously. MACS has the capability for an unlimited number of "users" to access MACS simultaneously.

Computer Hardware Purchase Suggestions

Virtually any IBM compatible personal computer capable of running Windows is adequate to run MACS Software. You will need approximately 50 to 150MB of hard disk storage space, depending on the modules installed, for the data you will accumulate using MACS.

Although not required, it is strongly recommended that you install the following peripheral equipment, which will help insure the integrity of your data:

  • TAPE BACKUP UNIT: Used for daily backup of the information stored on your computer.
  • UPS (UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY): Used to protect your system from power outages and surges.

If your agency is planning to install a network system, you should contact a qualified reseller who can recommend the proper configuration and assist in the installation and implementation of both the hardware and software.
